segundo
second
adjective noun seh-GOON-doh Common
Origin: From Latin secundus (following).
Usage Note
Segundo is both the ordinal adjective ('second') and the noun for the unit of time ('second'). As an ordinal it must agree in gender: segunda planta (second floor). In Spain floors are counted from the planta baja (ground floor), so segunda planta matches the British 'second floor' but the American 'third floor'. It also appears in de segunda mano (second-hand/used) — a very common expression in everyday speech.
Examples
"Vivo en el segundo piso."
Natural Translation
I live on the second floor.
