Sanidad denotes public health as an institutional system — Ministerio de Sanidad (Ministry of Health) in Spain. It is broader than salud (health of an individual) and more systemic than higiene (hygiene). In everyday speech, Spaniards say ir a sanidad to mean visiting the public health service; the word is less institutionally common in Latin America, where salud pública is preferred.
