saltar

to jump

verb sahl-TAHR Less Common

Origin: From Latin saltare (to leap, dance), frequentative of salire.

Also means

to skip

Usage Note

Saltar can mean to physically jump (saltó la valla = he jumped the fence), to skip over something (salta un capítulo = skip a chapter), or figuratively to explode/burst (saltaron las alarmas = alarms went off). The reflexive saltarse emphasises ignoring a rule or step: saltarse un semáforo (to run a red light) is a very common usage.
