Usage Note
Sal is grammatically feminine despite ending in a consonant. In cooking it is ordinary table salt; figuratively, sal means charm or wit — tiene mucha sal ('she has a lot of charm'). In several Latin American countries mala sal ('bad salt') is an informal way to say bad luck. The plural sales can refer to salts (chemical) or smelling salts.
