síntoma

noun SEEN-toh-mah Less Common

Origin: From Greek symptoma (occurrence, accident), from sympiptein (to fall together).

Usage Note

Síntoma is masculine despite ending in -a, a pattern shared by many medical/Greek-derived words (el problema, el tema, el programa). Síntoma is used both for medical symptoms and for figurative signs of a problem (un síntoma de la crisis). The plural síntomas is regular.
