Usage Note
Síndrome is masculine despite ending in -e — a common gender-trap for learners (el síndrome, not la síndrome). It is used in both clinical medicine (síndrome de Down) and figuratively for any cluster of characteristic behaviours or problems (síndrome del impostor, 'impostor syndrome'). The accent on the first syllable marks it as an esdrújula (proparoxytone).
Examples
"Le diagnosticaron un síndrome respiratorio."
Natural Translation
He was diagnosed with a respiratory syndrome.
