respectar

to concern

verb rrehs-peh-TAHR Rare

Also means

to regard

Usage Note

Respectar is a defective, dated verb surviving almost only in the fixed phrase (por/en) lo que respecta a = 'as regards, with respect to'. It is a false-friend trap: it does not mean 'to respect', which is respetar (noun respeto, adjective respetuoso). Outside that set phrase respectar is essentially obsolete.

Examples

"Por lo que respecta a los costes, todo está claro."

Natural Translation

As regards the costs, everything is clear.
