región

region

noun rreh-HYOHN Common

Also means

area; district

Usage Note

Región is feminine. Spain is officially divided into comunidades autónomas (autonomous communities), not regiones, but the word is used loosely in everyday speech for any geographic area. The plural regiones shifts the stress from the last syllable to the penultimate, as the written accent is dropped: re-GIO-nes.

Examples

"Esa región produce buen vino."

Natural Translation

That region produces good wine.
