Recreo covers both the abstract idea of leisure and recreation (parque de recreo — recreation park) and the concrete school recess period (a la hora del recreo — at recess time). In school contexts it is the standard term across Spain and Latin America. The verb recrearse means to take pleasure in something, to linger enjoyably.
