Usage Note
Ajedrez is always masculine and almost always used in the singular (el ajedrez). The pieces are las piezas de ajedrez and the board is el tablero de ajedrez. A chess player is an ajedrecista. The Arabic-origin al- prefix is common in many Spanish words (almohada, alcohol, albañil).
