Usage Note

Recolección means both the harvesting of crops (la recolección de la aceituna — 'the olive harvest') and the collection of data, waste, or items (recolección de datos, recolección de residuos). It is more formal than recogida, which is the everyday term for rubbish collection in Spain. In Latin America recolección de basura is the standard phrase.
