Pupila has two distinct meanings: the pupil of the eye (the dark opening in the iris) and, in an older or educational register, a female student or ward in a school or institution. In everyday medical and conversational use it almost always refers to the eye. The masculine counterpart for a male ward or student is pupilo. The unrelated English word 'pupil' for a schoolchild is more commonly rendered as alumno/alumna in modern Spanish.
