puder

to rot

verb poo-DREER Rare

Also means

to decay

Usage Note

Puder in the seed represents pudrir (also spelled podrir). Both infinitives are accepted by the RAE; pudrir is more common. The past participle is irregular: podrido/a (rotten), far more frequent in everyday use than the verb itself. Estar podrido en plata (or en dinero) is colloquial Latin American for 'to be filthy rich.'

Examples

"La fruta se pudre rápido con el calor."

Natural Translation

The fruit rots quickly in the heat.
