psicosis

psychosis

noun see-KOH-sees Rare

Origin: From Greek psykhōsis.

Usage Note

Psicosis is invariable in the plural — las psicosis — because it ends in an unstressed syllable followed by -s. The initial ps- cluster is often simplified to s- in informal speech though the full spelling is standard. It is a clinical term distinguishing a break from reality from neurosis.

Examples

"La psicosis puede tratarse con medicación."

Natural Translation

Psychosis can be treated with medication.
