Usage Note
Proteccionismo is the economic policy of shielding domestic industries from foreign competition through tariffs, quotas, and subsidies. Its adjective is proteccionista, which also serves as a noun (un proteccionista — 'a protectionist'). The term is opposed by librecambismo or libre comercio ('free trade') in economic debates.
