posponer

to postpone

verb pos-poh-NEHR Rare

Also means

to defer

Usage Note

Posponer is conjugated like poner (irregular): first-person singular present pospongo, preterite pospuse. It is a near-synonym of aplazar, but posponer emphasises placing something later in a sequence, while aplazar more often implies rescheduling to a new date. Both are standard across Spain and Latin America.

Examples

"Tuvimos que posponer la reunión hasta el martes."

Natural Translation

We had to postpone the meeting until Tuesday.
