Usage Note
Portero has two main meanings: in sports it is the goalkeeper (el portero del equipo), and in everyday life it is the doorman or concierge of a building (el portero del edificio). The feminine is portera. In Spain, portero automático (or portero electrónico) refers to a door intercom/buzzer system. Latin American usage prefers arquero for goalkeeper in football.
