porcentaje

percentage

noun pohr-sen-TAH-heh Less Common

Usage Note

Porcentaje always takes a masculine article: el porcentaje. When a percentage subject governs a verb, agreement typically follows the noun in the de phrase — un porcentaje de los alumnos aprobó or aprobaron are both acceptable, with plural preferred in informal speech. The word tanto por ciento is an older equivalent still seen in formal or legal texts.

Examples

"Un alto porcentaje de la población vive en ciudades."

Natural Translation

A high percentage of the population lives in cities.
