pollo

chicken

noun POH-yoh Rare

Usage Note

Pollo refers to both the live young bird and the meat, so context usually clarifies. Be aware that pollo (chicken) sounds identical to poyo (stone bench), a rare word that causes no practical confusion. The female adult chicken is gallina; the male adult is gallo. In some Latin American slang pollo can mean a novice or a young migrant attempting to cross a border.

Examples

"Hoy comeremos pollo asado."
