Pimiento is the fruit (capsicum), while pimienta is the ground spice — a distinction learners must memorise. Pimiento rojo/verde/amarillo are red/green/yellow (bell) peppers; pimiento picante is chilli pepper. In Spain, pimientos de Padrón (small green peppers, some fiery) are a classic tapas dish. The derived word pimentón refers to paprika powder.
