habichuela
green bean
noun ah-bee-CHWEH-lah Rare
Origin: From Arabic al-lubiyya (the bean).
Also means
kidney bean
Usage Note
Habichuela means green bean (fresh string bean) in Spain and much of Latin America, but in the Caribbean — especially Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic — it refers to the dried kidney bean or red bean (habichuela roja). The term judía verde is used for green beans in most of Spain, while ejote is the Mexican equivalent. Regional awareness prevents ordering the wrong dish.
Examples
"Preparé una ensalada con habichuelas frescas."
Natural Translation
I made a salad with fresh green beans.
