peregrino
pilgrim
noun peh-reh-GREE-noh Rare
Origin: From Latin peregrinus (foreigner, traveller).
Usage Note
Peregrino is strongly associated with the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, where pilgrims (often non-religious) walk hundreds of kilometres to the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela. The feminine form is peregrina. As an adjective peregrino can also mean 'strange' or 'outlandish' (una idea peregrina — a far-fetched idea).
Examples
"Miles de peregrinos llegan cada año a Santiago."
Natural Translation
Thousands of pilgrims arrive in Santiago every year.
