Usage Note

Pasivo describes a person or entity that receives rather than initiates action — the opposite of activo. In grammar, voz pasiva is the passive voice. In finance, el pasivo (used as a noun) means liabilities on a balance sheet, contrasting with el activo (assets). The feminine is pasiva.
