Usage Note

Partida is the feminine form of the adjective partido, but as a standalone noun it takes on distinct meanings: the departure of a journey, a game or match (especially chess or cards — una partida de ajedrez), or a line item in an account. It is a false friend for English 'party'; the Spanish word for 'party' (celebration) is fiesta or partido only in the political sense.
