Origin: From Old French parlement, from parler (to speak), ultimately from Late Latin parabolare.

Usage Note

Parlamento refers to a legislative assembly; in Spain the national legislature is formally called las Cortes Generales, but parlamento is used for regional assemblies such as el Parlamento de Cataluña. In Latin America congreso is often preferred for the national parliament. The adjective is parlamentario and a member is also called parlamentario.
