parachoques

bumper

noun pah-rah-CHOH-kehs Rare

Usage Note

Parachoques is invariable — the same form serves for both singular and plural, which trips up learners. It is a compound of parar (to stop) and choques (shocks/impacts). It is the standard term in Spain, while paragolpes is the usual word in parts of Latin America (notably Argentina). Do not confuse with parabrisas (windscreen) or guardabarros (mudguard).

Examples

"El coche tiene el parachoques abollado."

Natural Translation

The car has a dented bumper.
