nodriza

wet nurse

noun noh-DREE-sah Rare

Origin: From Latin nutrix (nurse).

Usage Note

Nodriza historically refers to a woman hired to breastfeed another's child, and by extension a nourishing or sustaining source (a nave nodriza is a mother ship or tanker aircraft). In modern Spanish it is largely a literary or historical term; contemporary usage for a breastfeeding support person more often says madre de leche or ama de cría. The masculine equivalent does not exist because the role was exclusively female.

Examples

"La nodriza cuidó al bebé con mucho cariño."

Natural Translation

The wet nurse cared for the baby with great affection.
