Multiplicar is used in both arithmetic (tres por cuatro son doce cuando multiplicas, 'multiply three by four') and figuratively (los problemas se multiplicaron, 'the problems multiplied'). The reflexive multiplicarse stresses rapid increase or proliferation. It takes the regular -car spelling change (c → qu) before e: multipliqué.
