Usage Note
Multicultural is an invariable adjective — it does not change for gender (un barrio multicultural / una ciudad multicultural). It is a direct borrowing of the English/French concept and entered Spanish in the late twentieth century alongside debates about immigration and integration. In academic contexts it is often contrasted with intercultural — multicultural acknowledges the coexistence of cultures, while intercultural implies active exchange and dialogue between them.
