Usage Note
Monje refers to a male member of a monastic religious order, such as a Benedictine or Cistercian. The feminine form monja means 'nun'. Do not confuse with fraile (friar), who belongs to a mendicant order and works in the world, whereas a monje typically lives cloistered. The adjective monacal ('monastic') derives from the same root.
Examples
"El monje rezaba en silencio cada mañana."
Natural Translation
The monk prayed in silence every morning.
