Usage Note

Metropolitano describes anything relating to a major city or its surrounding area (área metropolitana, 'metropolitan area'). In several Spanish cities it is also the noun for the metro/underground railway (el metropolitano), though el metro is more common colloquially. Agrees in gender: zona metropolitana.
