Usage Note
Metedura is almost always heard in the fixed phrase metedura de pata ('putting one's foot in it', a blunder). The expression is Spain-centric; Latin American speakers more commonly say metida de pata. The feminine noun metedura derives from meter ('to put/insert') and is rarely used outside this collocation. Register is informal.
