Origin: From French mascotte ('lucky charm'), popularised by the 1880 operetta 'La Mascotte'.

Usage Note

Mascota covers both a team's symbolic mascot and a household pet animal; animal de compañía is the more formal term for a pet. It is always feminine (la mascota) regardless of the animal's sex.
