Origin: From the Greek place name Marathon, site of the 490 BC battle whose messenger run inspired the modern race.

Usage Note

Maratón is accepted as both masculine (el maratón) and feminine (la maratón) by the RAE, though masculine is more common in Spain and feminine in parts of Latin America. Used figuratively for any gruelling long endeavour: una maratón de reuniones, 'a marathon of meetings'.
