Usage Note
Mártir is common gender — el mártir and la mártir both exist, marked only by the article. It is stressed on the first (penultimate) syllable yet carries a written accent because it ends in -r, overriding the default final-syllable stress. The derived verb martirizar means 'to martyr' or colloquially 'to torment.'
Examples
"La iglesia venera a ese mártir cristiano."
Natural Translation
The church venerates that Christian martyr.
