Lugar is a broad, neutral word for any place or location. It appears in many fixed expressions: en lugar de (instead of), tener lugar (to take place — el concierto tuvo lugar el sábado), en primer lugar (in the first place/firstly). It is slightly more formal than sitio or parte in everyday speech, but all three are common. Dar lugar a means 'to give rise to'.
