Lucro appears most often in fixed phrases: afán de lucro (profit motive) and sin ánimo de lucro (non-profit, literally 'without aim of gain'). It is formal and not used in everyday speech for ordinary income — use ganancia or beneficio there. The related verb is lucrar or the reflexive lucrarse.
