Usage Note

Liberalismo covers both the political philosophy of individual rights and limited government and the economic doctrine of free markets — meanings that sometimes conflict, especially between European and Latin American usage. In Spain it can carry a purely economic sense ('economic liberalism'), while in Latin America liberalismo often refers to a specific 19th-century political movement. The related party label is liberal.
