Lesión refers to a physical injury (lesión muscular) or, in law, harm to a right or interest (lesión de derechos). The verb is lesionar and the person who is injured is el/la lesionado/a. In sports reporting, lesión is the standard word for a player injury, not herida (which implies a wound from external force like a cut).
