Usage Note

Lector is a direct Latin cognate and is used for a reader of books or newspapers (un lector ávido) as well as a device (lector de libros electrónicos = e-reader, lector de DVD). In Spain's university system, a lector is also a language assistant (a native-speaker teacher of a foreign language), a specialised use unique to academic contexts. The feminine form is lectora.
