Invierno is the season from December to February in the Northern Hemisphere and June to August in the Southern Hemisphere — relevant when talking about Latin American or Spanish contexts. En invierno (in winter) needs no article, but el invierno pasado (last winter) uses one. The adjective is invernal (temperaturas invernales — winter temperatures).
