inhibición

inhibition

noun een-ee-bee-SYOHN Rare

Origin: From Latin inhibitio, from inhibere (to hold in).

Usage Note

Inhibición covers both the physiological sense (enzyme or neural inhibition) and the psychological sense of being inhibited or held back socially. The plural inhibiciones is common in therapeutic contexts: superar las inhibiciones. Note that in Spanish legal language inhibición can also mean the recusal or withdrawal of a judge from a case, a meaning absent from English 'inhibition'.

Examples

"Superó sus inhibiciones con el tiempo."

Natural Translation

She overcame her inhibitions over time.
