Origin: via Italian infanteria, from infante (foot soldier), ultimately from Latin infans (one unable to speak, i.e. young)

Usage Note

Infantería is the branch of the army that fights on foot. The compound infantería de marina is the marines. In formal military contexts you will see infantería de línea (line infantry) contrasted with special forces units.
