Indio refers to a native indigenous person of the Americas or to a person from India, depending on context. In many Latin American countries it carries a derogatory connotation when applied to indigenous people, and indígena is the preferred neutral term. As an adjective it means 'Indian' (from India) or 'indigenous.' The feminine form is india.
