incrementar

to increase

Origin: From Latin incrementare, from incrementum (growth, increase).

to increment

Usage Note

Incrementar is slightly more formal than aumentar and is preferred in economic, scientific, and bureaucratic contexts: incrementar el presupuesto (to increase the budget). The reflexive incrementarse is used when the subject itself grows: el precio se incrementó un 5% (the price increased by 5%). The noun incremento (increase, increment) is common in statistics and finance. Aumentar remains the more everyday synonym.
