hospitalidad

hospitality

noun ohs-pee-tah-lee-DAHD Rare

Origin: Latin hospitalitas, from hospes (guest, host)

Usage Note

Hospitalidad refers to the warm, generous treatment of guests and strangers. The adjective hospitalario (hospitable) shares the root; so does hospital (hospital). Note that in Spanish the h is always silent, so the word begins with the vowel sound /os-/.

Examples

"La hospitalidad de sus anfitriones nos sorprendió a todos."

Natural Translation

Their hosts' hospitality surprised us all.
