Usage Note
Holding is a direct borrowing from English used in Spanish business and financial writing to mean a parent company that controls subsidiaries. It is invariable in gender and takes masculine article — el holding. The plural is los holdings. Some style guides prefer the native equivalent sociedad matriz or empresa tenedora, but holding dominates in press and corporate language.
Examples
"El holding controla diez empresas distintas."
Natural Translation
The holding company controls ten different companies.
