Hermana is the female counterpart of hermano. The plural hermanos is gender-inclusive and means 'siblings' when referring to a mixed-gender group — not just brothers. Media hermana means 'half-sister'; hermanastra means 'stepsister'. The expression países hermanos ('brother nations') uses the masculine form for abstract collective reference.
