Usage Note

Guardia is feminine as an institution (la guardia) but can be masculine or feminine as a person (el/la guardia = the guard). Guardia civil is Spain's national paramilitary police force. Estar de guardia means 'to be on duty/on call' (used for doctors, pharmacies, security). En guardia ('on guard') is also a fencing term.
