Guarda is a common-gender noun: el guarda (male guard) and la guarda (female guard or the act of keeping). It often appears in compounds such as guardabosques (forest ranger) and guardacostas (coast guard). As an abstract noun la guarda also means the act of guarding or custody, distinct from el guardia (a police officer).
